The Archivision Research Library is comprised of 133,000 professional, high quality images covering architecture, urban design, archaeological sites, landscapes, gardens, and works of art. The Library is intended for teaching and scholarship in architecture and art history but also has broad appeal across disciplines. The collection was photographed by Scott Gilchrist, a trained architect as well as professional photographer, who is actively photographing and adding new content (now 3,000 new images annually). The Library is divided into Modules, which are licensed in sequence to own in perpetuity or can be accessed via our Subscribe to Own options. The Library spans the globe and all time periods, with each Module offering a mix of historic and contemporary content complete with rich, extensively researched descriptive information.

    The Library's Base Collection is a core architecture collection representing major Greek, Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, 18th & 19th Century and Modern sites. The focus here is the Italian Renaissance and Baroque and Modern architecture, especially the work of Louis Kahn and Le Corbusier. The collection also includes gardens & parks, city skylines, cityscapes and public art as well as other design related topics, such as C.R.     (A1) ADDITION MODULE ONE (6,000 images)

    The first Addition Module completes our holdings on Renaissance and Baroque Rome not included in the Base Collection. It also contains all of our Ancient Egyptian material (close to 2000 images – this was our major photographic campaign of 2004). The collection also holds all of our Islamic material in Egypt, as well as overview sets on Cairo, Aswan and Luxor. Many contemporary sites are also included, especially those in Vancouver, Seattle, Boston and Montréal.

    (A2) ADDITION MODULE TWO (6,000 images)

    Module Two contains all of our Andrea Palladio material (over 700 images, of which 299 are Scamozzi etchings illustrating plans, sections and elevations of Palladio's work); all of the Hector Guimard collection (229 images); Fascist architecture in Italy; most of our holdings from London England; and the balance of our Ancient Greek and Bramante material not contained in the first two modules. The Module also includes all of our Islamic architecture in Turkey plus contemporary architecture in Florida, New York, Montreal, and Washington DC. The Module is rounded out with 300 exquisite new (May 2007) photographs of the exterior and interiors of Mackintosh’s Hill House.

    (A3) ADDITION MODULE THREE (6,000 images)

    The third Addition Module spans contemporary (Millennium Park in Chicago; works by Gehry, Pelli, Calatrava and Libeskind) to the ancient world (the mosaics from Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina, Sicily; Ephesus and other monuments of the Roman empire) and in between (French chateaux and gardens; Byzantine architecture in Mystras; Venice). Other highlights include the rest of our holdings on Frank Lloyd Wright; major murals of Diego Rivera and excellent coverage of Oxford photographed in May of 2007.

    (A4) ADDITION MODULE FOUR (6,000 images) (made available 2009)

    Module four features Russia as a highlight (over 2000 images photographed in summer 2005 including the major palaces and gardens around St Petersburg and coverage in Moscow.) The module also holds more material from Paris, including several important hôtels, and London--extensive coverage of Chiswick House and grounds, plus many of Wren's churches. For Classics we offer all of our ancient Roman drawings scanned directly from original 19th century volumes (348 plans, sections and elevations) and coverage of the Elgin marbles. Art from the Victoria and Albert Museum, including their amazing cast collection, provides survey support. Our collection from Mexico is also included (Mexico City, Cuernavaca, Puebla and Taxco.) For contemporary, there is new architecture in London and in LA, including Gehry's Disney Concert Hall and complete coverage of the Franklin D Murphy Sculpture Garden at UCLA. And finally two important works by Mackintosh, the Glasgow School of Art and the House of an Art Lover, round out this module.

    (A5) ADDITION MODULE FIVE (6,000 images) (made available 2010)

    The Olympic Village in Beijing along with the Humble Administrator's Garden (Zhuozheng yuan) in Suzhou bring some of our new Asian content into this module. The module also contains the work of Antonio Gaudi in Barcelona, with extensive coverage of Park Guell, Casa Mila and Sagrada Familia (including recent interiors taken Oct 2008). Other important works in Barcelona include the Barcelona Pavilion by Mies and the Fundacio Antoni Tapies. Calatrava is represented by five works, including the City of Arts and Science in Valencia. The module also includes more works by Mackintosh, including Queen's Cross Church. Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and public art in Spain and the US round out the module, including superb details of the mosaics at Queen Califia's Magical Circle Garden by Niki de Saint-Phalle. As always the module spans a mix of time periods and geography, from works by Niemeyer in Brasilia to Bled Castle in Slovenia.

    Module Six contains more of our European and Asian content photographed in 2009. The European material covers more work by Le Corbusier in Paris and near Lyon, plus new work in Rome, Berlin, Stockholm and Oslo. The Bauhaus in Dessau was extensively covered (including the Master houses and other important works in Dessau), as well as early modern and recent works in Berlin. For Asia content we bring to this module an extensive coverage of the Forbidden City and the Youngang Grottos in Datong, including new works in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, and much, much more (for a complete list of sites covered in Asia click here).

    Module Seven contains more of our European and Asian content photographed from 2009-2011. The European material includes an extensive documentation of the Pergamon Altar in the Pergamon Museum, Berlin; Georgian Architecture in Edinburgh; the Glasgow Science Center by Building Design Partnership; the Albert Hall, Albert Memorial and Hyde Park, London; and the Ara Pacis Museum in Rome by Richard Meier. Highlights from China include the Hanging Monastery and the all wood Pagoda of Fogong Temple of the Eleventh Century, both south of Datong. From Japan we include extensive coverage of the Meiji Jingu Shrine and Audi Forum Tokyo by CDI, to name a few. From the USA we cover the High Line Park and Apple Cube in New York and the Biglow Chapel and Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, plus gorgeous details of the National Farmer's Bank of Owatonna by Louis Sullivan, among many others. The module is rounded off with complete coverage of two sites in Cambodia: Ankor Wat and the Royal Palace of Phnon Penh including over 160 details of the Ramayana Frescoes, and so much more!

    Module Eight holds extensive new photography in the USA, including: Watts Towers, non-traditional vernacular architecture in Los Angeles, built over a 33-year period by Sabato Rodia; the beautiful pre-weathered steel Arabian Public Library by Richard + Bauer Architecture in Scottsdale AZ; and Simmons Hall at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by Steven Holl, to name a few. Important works in Germany are covered—the modern Bauhaus Archive by Walter Gropius in Darmstadt, and in Berlin, the Library for the Faculty of Philosophy by Foster + Partners, the German Historical Museum by IM Pei, the German Chancellery by Charlotte Frank and Axel Schultes, other new government buildings around the Reichstag, and art objects in the Bode Museum, such as The Lamentation of Christ by Juan de Valmaseda.

    For Module Nine, Archivision undertook a major documentation of important works in the Netherlands during the summer of 2013, including Het Schip and Spaarndammerplantsoen (north and south) by Michel de Kierk. Other important works in the Netherlands include the Hilversum City Hall by Dudok, the colourful Institute for Sound and Vision by Neutelings Riedijk Architecten, the early modern (Nieuwe Bouwen) Zonnestraal estate by Jan Duiker, and the famous De Stijl Schröder House by Rietveld. The module also contains a selection of art works from the Rijksmuseum Garden and museum. For new architecture from Asia this module includes Taipei 101 by C.Y. Lee & Partners, the Beijing Capital Airport, the Shanghai Tower by Gensler (still under construction but almost there …) and 21_21 Design Sight by Tadao Ando in Tokyo.

    The focus for Module Ten is the USA with over 3500 images, many from our photo campaign in the west and southwest in Oct. 2014. Highlights in NM include the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Taos Pueblo; El Rancho de Las Golondrinas near Sante Fe (a living Spanish hacienda); the New Mexico Museum of Art by Isaac Rapp (best example of the Pueblo Revival Style); and the amazing organic architecture of the Prince House & Studio by Bart Prince. Highlights in Los Angeles include the Theme Building LAX, by Pereira & Luckman and Union Station by the Parkinsons, which combines revival styles with Streamline Moderne creating a unique effect. In San Francisco we cover the De Young Museum, by Herzog & de Meuron; The Terrace at the CA Academy of Science, a stunning essay in Modernist simplicity by Mark Cavagnero; and the gorgeous Japanese Tea Garden, Golden Gate Park.

    (AMA) ADJUNCT MODULE A -- ITALIAN ART (3,000 images) (available now)

    This module of 3,000 images covers a wide range of art in Italy, from Ancient Roman frescoes, mosaics and sculpture to masterworks—paintings and sculpture—from the Medieval to Baroque periods. Where possible extensive details were taken which are not available from other sources. This collection is pulled from over 22,000 photographs taken during the summer of 2015 with many more works following in Adjunct Module B: Italian Art (another 3,000 photos) to be published winter 2017.

    Module Eleven contains many important recent works from China, including the futuristic forms of the Dalian City Sport Center; the Dalian International Conference Center and the Dalian Shell Museum. Also featured is the Lingering Garden in Suzhou, one of the most loved classical Chinese gardens. From India comes exquisite documentation of the Taj Mahal; coverage of the Devi Jagadambi Temple complex, the Secretariat in New Delhi and the Indian Institute of Management by Louis Kahn, to name just a few. In the USA, Colorado is featured, including the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver by Allied Works Architecture, a triumph in minimalist architecture. New Urbanism is represented by Iris Hollow, a Boulder development by Coburn.

    Our second Art only Module of 3,000 images covers more art in Italy, from Ancient Roman frescoes, mosaics and sculpture to more works by the masters—paintings and sculpture—from the Medieval to Baroque periods. As always, extensive details were taken which are not available from other sources.     Module Twelve’s focus is important works in Italy, including complete documentation (interior & exterior) of the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi; the House of Augustus in Rome; the newly opened Santa Maria Antiqua, in the Roman Forum; the Basilica of Saint'Andrea in Mantua; San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna; the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini; and the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena, to name but a few. More artifacts from Pompeii are included (photographed from the "Pompeii" traveling exhibit in Montreal, 2016). The module also includes a signature work by I. M. Pei – Mesa Laboratory – in Boulder, plus more new innovative housing there, and two new museums in Canada. Non-Western coverage includes Tiger Hill, Suzhou, China and the Jahangir Mahal, in Orchha, India. From Thailand is a complete documentation of the magical Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) in Bangkok. From the Dakar region of Senegal comes the infamous House of Slaves (now a museum and memorial) and the Sobo Bade theatre complex at Toubab Dialaw (Dialao), built in 2009 in a traditional, yet eclectic, vernacular style. Included to round off this module is an amazing photographic journey through Cambodia, documenting everyday life.

    (AMC) ADJUNCT MODULE C -- WORLD ART (3,000 images) (images available now; data to come April, 2018)

    The latest art-only module expands beyond Italy to include art from France, North America and Asia. From France, highlights from the extensive oeuvre of Marc Chagall, both from the Chagall Museum in Nice and the Chagall: Colour and Music exhibit in Montréal (2017) are included. Among the works are costumes he designed for the ballet and opera, and details of the hard-to-find Chagall mosaic, ‘Moses Saved from the Waters,’ found in Vence Cathedral. The module also documents art works from the Matisse Museum in Nice, including several of his well-known cutouts, such as the striking and colorful ones made to illustrate the book ‘Jazz.’ From this part of France also come objects in the Renoir Museum at Cagnes-sur-Mer, including portraits of Renoir by Albert André.

    Module Thirteen's focus is new architecture in Italy, France and the USA. From the USA is a complete documentation of the futuristic Florida Polytechnic University by Calatrava; from Italy, the CityLifeMilano Residential Complex by Zaha Hadid, the nearby Allianz Tower by Andrea Maffei and Arata Isozaki, the green Bosco Verticale by Boeri Studio (all in Milan); and the 25 Verde (Green) by Luciano Pia in Turin. Works from France include the amazing Pierres Vives (library) by Zaha Hadid; and the Green Cube (Euronews Headquarters) and Orange Cube (a wharf redevelopment project) by Jakob + MacFarlane in Lyon. The module showcases many Modernist works including the Lingotto Building (auto factory built by Fiat) in Turin by Giacomo Matté-Trucco.

    Art Module D contains a complete documentation of the cutting-edge replica of prehistoric cave art at the new International Centre for Cave Art, Lascaux, France. Also from France are more works from both the Chagall and Matisse Museums in Nice, as well as works from the nearby Fondation Maeght. From Italy, we include the Legend of the True Cross frescoes by Piero della Francesca (in San Francesco, Arezzo). Florence coverage includes the newly redesigned Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, featuring the original sculptures relocated on a magnificent recreation of the original façade (destroyed 1587) as well as coverage of Santissima Annunziata, Chiostrino dei Voti frescoes. This module also completes our interior coverage of the Palazzo del Te, Mantua, by Giulio Romano, including the Sala dei Giganti.

    Module Fourteen’s primary focus is Islamic architecture in Andalusia, Spain; including a very detailed documentation of the largely Nasrid period Alhambra complex in Granada. (The Generalife complex and gardens will be published in 2020). The module also includes extensive documentation of the Mezquita in Cordoba, including all of the building phases of this cathedral-mosque from Visigothic/Byzantine to Umayyad and finally Renaissance; included are the Villaviciosa, Royal and Santa Teresa Chapels. A secondary focus of the module are important works from Portugal, such as the lovely garden of the Palace of the Marquesses of Fronteira, with its playful azulejo tiles and grottoes; selections from the National Tile Museum, and the famous Convent of Madre Deus. The Bom Jesus do Monte pilgrimage church just outside Braga is also featured, with complete documentation of the massive Baroque stairs. And finally from Portugal is the Palace of Sintra with azulejos found throughout the palace and the remarkable 16th C. Sala dos Brasões.

    Our latest art module brings extensive coverage of Italian fresco cycles; the Arena Chapel by Giotto and the Baptistery of Padua by Giusto de' Menabuoi. Also from Italy is complete coverage of the restored frescos of the Villa Poppaea in Oplontis (modern Torre Annunziata), \Roman sculpture from Palazzo Massimo alle Terme in Rome, and in situ mosaics from Cefalù and Rome. For contemporary works we include highlights from this year's Biennale in Venice: "May You Live in Interesting Times". A new Archivision destination is Quito, Ecuador; we include highlights from the Casa del Alabado Museum of Pre-Columbian Art and works by Oswaldo Guayasamín in his purpose-built 'La Capilla del Hombre'.

    Module Fifteen brings exciting new architecture from Mexico, including the sculptural and shimmering Museo Soumaya by Fernando Romero and Museo Jumex by David Chipperfield. Highlights from the Mexico City business district Santa Fe include the underground mall Garden Santa Fe, the Louis Kahn-inspired Calakmul Corporate Building, the church complex Parroquia San Josemaria Escriva, and the angular Paradox Tower (by SOM). Extensive coverage of the site of Teotihuacan includes related works held in the Museum of Anthropology. Also from Mexico City is complete documentation of the Frida Kahlo House Museum (Casa Azul) and the gorgeous Palacio de Bellas Artes, with an Art Deco interior.

    (A16) MODULE SIXTEEN - (3000 images & data available now)

    The bulk of new content in Module 16 covers multiple works in India, France, the USA, Spain and Mexico. There is also some content from Taiwan, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Ecuador, Portugal, England and Scotland. From India we include more coverage of Jaipur and environs: the City Palace, including the remaining doors in the inner courtyard known as Pritam Niwas Chowk with each door representing a different Hindu God; an excellent overview of the Jaipur Monkey Temple at Galtaji, where heritage paintings from mythology and the Hindu religion adorn the walls and ceilings (many included in this site documentation); and the Sisodia Rani Ka Baha, also covered in paintings. From France, there is the Atelier de Cezanne in Aix-en-Provence and the Marc Chagall Tomb in Saint-Paul de Vence; also in Vence is the only architectural work by the artist Henri Matisse, The Rosary Chapel; and in Nîmes Médiathèque Carré d'Art Nimes by Foster + Partners.

    Module 17 highlights an excellent documentation of the Famen Temple Cultural Scenic Area near Xi’an, China (built 2006-2009), which covers 150 acres with a massive modern temple (Namaste Dagoba) as the focus dedicated to the most important relic in Buddhism: the Buddha finger bone. From Mexico (most photographed in Dec. 2021) this module brings you two important and monumental works in Guadalajara by Jose Clemente Orozco: 1) The People and Its Leaders and 2) Capilla Mayor Murals. Also from Guadalajara are many important recent and modern structures, including the poetic Arca Design Center by Esrawe Studio, the daring AC Hotel Marriott by Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos, and the round iconic Torre Icon 23 by Lucia Ragogna Y Paulina Corcuera, to name just a few. From the Dolores Olmedo Museum in Mexico City is the “Sunset Collection” by Diego Rivera, painted a year before the artist’s death in 1956 at the home of Dolores, in Acapulco: the series reflects Rivera’s ongoing experimentation with colors and techniques.

    Module 18 includes extensive documentation of the two Frank LLoyd Wright houses in Manchester, NH: the Zimmerman House (Usonian, 1951) and Kalil House (Usonian Automatic, 1955). This includes both the grounds and the interior of each house. In both one can see Wright’s use of tight narrow front halls, which create suspense until you arrive at the houses’ one great space, the living room. A few miles away is the Canterbury Shaker Village with exteriors photos and also including interiors of most buildings. Canterbury Shaker Village is a National Historic Landmark with 29 18th century Shaker buildings on 694 acres founded by Father Job Bishop. This module brings us many of the recent structures in New York City, including the Hudson Yard’s SHED, Edge and Vessel, the One World Trade Center, The National September 11 Memorial & Museum and the World Trade Center Transportation Hub (2004), by Calatrava.

    The new content in Module 19 covers multiple works in Austria, China, Columbia, England, France, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Taiwan, and the USA. From China, we include the Lingyin temple in Hangzhou (one of the largest Buddhist temples in China with pagodas and grottos) and Macau’s A-Ma Cultural Center with the world’s tallest statue of A-Ma and landmark Science Center with its conical shape and spiral walkway. The focus in India is Hyderabad, including the Golconda fort, the magnificent Qutub Shahi tombs (the oldest monuments in the city), and the Swayambhu Chennakesava Swamy temple, a rare example of a temple built to reconcile the warring Shaivites and Vaishnavaites. Additional coverage of Columbia includes Bogatá’s Parque la Candelaria green space, Cartagena’s Spanish colonial Sanctuario de San Pedro Claver, and the Restaurante in Situ by Santiago Caicedo in Medellín’s Jardín Botánico. From northern England, there is extensive coverage of Hadrian’s Wall, a major feat of Roman engineering showing the visible remains and the associated f orts, milecastles, and turrets at Birdoswald, Cawfields, Chesters, Corbridge, Housesteads, Vindolanda, and Wallsend. Additional ancient monuments are included from Rome, including the Necropolis of the Via Triumphalis (only recently opened to the public in Vatican city), the Porta San Sebastiano leading to the Via Appia with the Museo della Mura and nearby Tomb of the Scipios as well as art works from Palazzo Massimo and the Capitoline Museum. This module also brings more from various locations in the USA, such as the Bryant Bannister Tree Ring Building by Richard Kennedy Architects at the University of Arizona, the Little Big Horn Battlefield in Montana, and the National Parks’ grandest hotels: Yellowstone’s Old Faithful Inn, Yosemite’s Ahwhanee Hotel, and the Inn at Death Valley. And, there is so much more, Göttweig Abbey in Austria, I Tatti in Florence, Tarragona in Spain, Orange in France, etc.
